Snowfalls - Significant avalanche danger in the Bavarian Alps

The heavy snowfall has increased the risk of avalanches in the Bavarian Alps. Above 1600 meters, the avalanche warning center of the Bavarian State Office for the Environment announced on Saturday that there is a warning level three on the five-level scale and therefore a considerable risk of avalanches.

The main problem is the fresh snow. Even a single winter sports enthusiast could trigger slab avalanches. In rocky, steep terrain, loose snow avalanches could come down on their own. In some cases, sliding snow avalanches can also trigger themselves on steep meadow slopes. "Overall, the snow depth is above average for the time of year at all altitudes," write the avalanche experts.

Below 1600 meters, the avalanche danger is moderate despite the masses of snow. The old snow under the fresh snow is moist to wet and the bonding to the fresh snow is good.

The precipitation should largely stop on Sunday. The avalanche danger will slowly decrease over the next few days.
