Traffic - Signal box malfunction stops train with 200 passengers for hours
A Deutsche Bahn ICE train carrying around 200 passengers came to a standstill for several hours on an open stretch of track near Oebisfelde (Börde district) late on Wednesday evening. The train from Berlin to Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe was unable to continue its journey due to a signal box fault, said a Deutsche Bahn spokesman on Thursday night. The fault occurred at around 9 pm. Technicians were working feverishly to rectify the fault in the Oebisfelde signal box.
The train was able to continue its journey at around 2.50 a.m. and ended the night prematurely in Wolfsburg. Other trains on the route were initially diverted via Magdeburg. This initially also applied to Thursday morning. According to a Deutsche Bahn spokesperson, the signal box malfunction continued into the morning hours. It was unclear when the fault would be rectified.
As Deutsche Bahn announced on its website, all ICE and IC trains between Berlin and Cologne/Bonn and between Berlin and Hanover and Göttingen will be rerouted in both directions and will be delayed by around 75 minutes as a result. The Berlin-Spandau, Stendal and Wolfsburg stops will be canceled. Some of the rerouted trains will also stop in Magdeburg.
