Sign for Israel's right to exist and against anti-Semitism

The Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament wants to send a clear signal for Israel's right to exist and against anti-Semitism. It is shocking what has been happening on the streets of Germany since the beginning of the Gaza war between the Islamist Hamas and Israel, said FDP parliamentary group leader Philipp Fernis on Monday in Mainz. There is obviously a bigger problem with anti-Semitism in the country than previously thought.

The parliamentary group leaders of the SPD and the Greens, Sabine Bätzing-Lichtenthäler and Pia Schellhammer, as well as the Parliamentary Secretary of the CDU parliamentary group, Martin Brandl, also strongly condemned the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7. CDU politician Brandl reiterated his call for a clear signal from the Islamic associations in Rhineland-Palatinate to condemn this attack and make a clear commitment to Israel's right to exist.

The two-day debate in the state parliament this Tuesday in Mainz will begin with the agenda item "'Never again' is now - We stand with Israel". State Parliament President Hendrik Hering, Minister President Malu Dreyer (both SPD) and the chairpersons of the parliamentary groups will speak.

Parliament will also discuss a state law on the agreements between the state of Rhineland-Palatinate and the State Association of Jewish Communities of Rhineland-Palatinate and the Jewish Community of Mainz-Rheinhessen. Among other things, it deals with an increase in state funding.

The SPD and Greens parliamentary group leaders, along with the CDU's Parliamentary Secretary, have all condemned the Hamas attack on Israel and called for a clear stance against anti-Semitism. In the upcoming state law discussion, the focus will also involve the cooperation between the state of Rhineland-Palatinate and local Jewish communities, emphasizing their support for Israel's existence.
