Siemens Energy starts electrolyzer production in Berlin

The energy company Siemens Energy is now producing important machines, so-called electrolysers, for the production of hydrogen in Berlin. The production capacity in the first year will be one gigawatt, said Managing Director Anne-Laure Parrical de Chammard in Berlin on Wednesday. Next year, it will be two gigawatts, and from 2025 the capacity is set to increase to three gigawatts. "This means that we would produce around 20 gigawatts of electrolyser capacity by 2030," said the board member. "That is twice as much as the target for Germany and half as much as the European Union's target."

Electrolysers split water into its components oxygen and hydrogen using electricity. The hydrogen can be stored, transported and later burned or converted into electricity, for example. Unlike fossil fuels, no CO2 is released during these processes. Hydrogen is therefore considered an important component for a climate-neutral energy transition, especially in industry. The prerequisite is that the electricity required for the electrolysis process comes from green sources. The German government wants to expand hydrogen capacities in Germany to ten gigawatts by 2030.

Siemens is cooperating with the French gas company Air Liquide on production in Berlin and is investing around 30 million euros in the new production line.

The production of these electrolysers by Siemens Energy will significantly contribute to the company's goal of producing 20 gigawatts of hydrogen by 2030, as hydrogen production without CO2 emissions is essential for a climate-neutral energy transition in industries. The collaboration between Siemens and Air Liquide in Berlin's production will help to meet the German government's target of expanding hydrogen capacities to ten gigawatts by the same year.
