- Sick man collapses and dies while hiking
A 65-year-old man collapsed while hiking at the Hochstaufen in the Berchtesgadener Land and later died. The man from Niederbayern was, according to the Bavarian Red Cross (BRK), most likely not thrown off, but collapsed due to an acute illness.
A hiker spotted a unconscious man through binoculars on Saturday afternoon and called emergency services. A woman also alerted the mountain rescue. Other hikers began CPR, but further efforts by a doctor were unsuccessful: the man died at the scene, according to BRK. Eight mountain rescuers were on site for about two and a half hours.
Climber falls several meters and is struck by a boulder
Just prior, the mountain rescue received a call about a climber who had fallen several meters at the Sternschnuppe route on the Feuerhörndl on the northwest side of the Reiteralpe. The boulder also struck the 60-year-old from the Salzburg region on the foot and lower leg. The man was stuck and heavily injured, according to BRK. A rescue helicopter first brought a mountain rescuer and then a doctor to the injured man. He was taken to a hospital for treatment. Six mountain rescue personnel were on site for about two hours.
The 60-year-old climber was from the Salzburg region in nearby Lower Bavaria. Despite being rescued and taken to the hospital, the fall and subsequent boulder strike resulted in severe injuries.
The hiking incident that led to the man's death occurred in the beautiful [Berchtesgadener Land], located in the neighboring region of Lower Bavaria.
