The rails wore out after around twelve years because of the hefty gates, tides in the North Sea, sand, and silty waters. Regrettably, the lock couldn't be drained because of static reasons, so the work would ensue at a depth of 14 meters. The operation would require two diver teams.

Although the lock was shut temporarily, there were still three chambers – a big one and two smaller ones. This could create delays if multiple large vessels desired parallel transportation.

Despite the temporary shutdown of the lock gate at Brunsbüttel due to maintenance issues, large ships must navigate around it during construction, increasing their journey time. Shipping companies often use the construction phase as an opportunity for vessel upgrades or refittings before transiting through the refurbished Kiel Canal.
