Fire department operation - Shipyard wants to clean up after shipyard fire
After the large fire on the grounds of the Lürssen-Kroger shipyard in Schacht-Audorf, investigations and cleanup efforts have begun. The fire in a shipbuilding hall had been extinguished since early morning hours, according to a spokesperson of the German Press Agency (dpa) on Wednesday. "We will now take steps in coordination with the relevant authorities for the cleanup."
The fire department has ended their approximately 20-hour intervention and handed over to the shipyard's fire department, a fire department spokesperson told dpa. At the height of the intervention, up to 420 people fought against the flames in the hall.
Thirty residents had to leave their houses on Tuesday due to the intervention. However, they were able to return in the evening, according to a police spokesperson. The warning apps had already given the all-clear.
The company has suspended production
The company suspended production until the evening. This would be gradually resumed from Thursday in designated areas of the shipyard grounds, the spokesperson said. The employees were to be informed about the latest developments. The spokesperson declined to comment on further details.
Fire investigators want to inspect the shipbuilding hall
"The fire scene has been secured," the police spokesperson said. Fire investigators hoped to enter the hall as soon as possible, which should happen no later than Thursday or Friday. Before that, the temperature had to return to a manageable level. Temperatures in the hall had reached over 1,000 degrees Celsius according to earlier police reports.
The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage were still unknown, the police spokesperson said. According to information from the German Press Agency, a new 75-meter-long yacht was located in the hall. Its estimated value was supposedly around 100 million euros. The construction (project name Honolulu) was already well advanced. The yard at Rendsburg on the North Sea Canal specializes in building luxury yachts.
Smoke column visible for kilometers
The fire intervention began on Tuesday at 9:20 a.m. Due to the strong smoke development, the population in the area was asked at times to close windows and doors, as well as to turn off ventilation and air conditioning systems. The dense black smoke clouds were partially visible for kilometers. The burning hall and nearby houses were partially enveloped in the smoke clouds. The yard workers had already left the premises.
The yard has not yet commented on the possible cause of the fire and the ship in the shipbuilding hall. The Lürssen Group has its headquarters in Bremen. At the Schacht-Audorf site, according to company information, medium and large yachts from 55 to 110 meters in length are built, as well as refits and maintenance work on smaller ships. Larger yachts have also had their launch here.
