Ship on Moselle rams into wall of lock system
A cargo ship has crashed into the wall of a lock system on the Moselle. The collision on Tuesday morning near Bruttig-Fankel (district of Cochem-Zell) caused the bow of the ship to be torn open, according to the police. The lock system and the wall were severely damaged.
According to initial findings, the reason for the collision was a strong current that caught the ship in the area of the lock's outer harbor. No one was reportedly injured. After the accident, the ship was able to be moored alongside the damaged sheet piling. The police also issued a ban on further navigation until clarification by an expert.
The shipping company is arranging for a tugboat to transport the damaged ship away from the lock system to prevent any further accidents. Despite the accident, the authorities have not yet determined if there were any technical issues with the ship's navigation system.
