Irina Scherbakova, a Russian human rights activist, highlighted the significance of reliable institutions during the Catholic Day in Erfurt. She cautioned against the rising populist movements that threaten these institutions. In her opinion, the biggest danger right now is when people lose their faith in these institutions. During her speech on Thursday, she also pointed out how this phenomenon is evident in Russia.

Scherbakova condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin as an opponent of human dignity. She has previously accused Putin of dismantling democracy and severely limiting civil liberties in Russia.

Irena Scherbakova, who holds a doctorate in German studies, is one of Memorial's founding members. This organization was given the Nobel Peace Prize in 2022. However, it was forcibly disbanded by Russian authorities in its home country in 2021 due to alleged legal violations. Memorial was known for supporting politically persecuted and incarcerated individuals and helping to uncover crimes committed during the communist dictatorship. Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Scherbakova has been residing in Germany.
