DWD forecast - Severe storm in Detmold - bypass road closed
In Detmold, in the Lippe district, heavy rainfall of up to 100 liters per square meter was reported according to city statements within a short time during a severe storm on Thursday. For comparison: In North Rhine-Westphalia, there was an average of 91 liters of rain per square meter in the entire month of April - which is around 50% more rainfall than in average years.
The B239 highway was flooded for approximately two kilometers. The water reached about 60 centimeters high on the bypass, a police spokesperson stated on Thursday. Currently, the fire department sees no possibility of pumping away the rainwater. "The water would immediately run from the fields onto the street," the police spokesperson said in the evening.
No one was harmed by the storm. Two accidents occurred during the heavy rain, but it was only property damage.
The city of Detmold also reported that parts of the inner city and especially the Klüt district were particularly affected. In this district, there were already severe damages caused by heavy rain a year ago. The flooded streets in the city center also made it impossible for vehicles to pass at times.
The fire department was called to 150 interventions. Many cellars had to be pumped out. The emergency pastoral care and city employees were in action to support the affected people. For those who could not temporarily inhabit their homes, the city prepared up to 30 sleeping places in municipal shelters.
