At least three people have died while hiking and climbing in the Bavarian Alps over the weekend. A 60-year-old was also seriously injured and taken to a hospital. A 13-year-old boy escaped with a scare and only minor injuries: A rescue helicopter saved the boy from a river after he was swept away by the current.
Friends separate due to weather: 23-year-old falls and dies
A 23-year-old from Erlangen died while attempting to traverse the Watzmann in the Berchtesgaden Alps. He and a friend had set out to climb the mountain on Thursday, but they separated due to adverse weather conditions. The friend wanted to abandon the crossing, but the 23-year-old continued with an unknown group of climbers. When the 23-year-old could not be reached and didn't respond, his friend reported him missing on Saturday evening. On Sunday, rescue teams found the young man's body. He is believed to have fallen in the area of the Watzmann's middle peak. Police are seeking witnesses.
Munich man falls 150 meters to his death
A 32-year-old Munich man fell approximately 150 meters to his death while hiking in the Bavarian Prealps on Sunday afternoon. According to police, he stumbled over steel cables while descending the Brecherspitz near Schliersee and fell into the steep southern slope. He was with six friends at the time and succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
On Saturday, a 65-year-old man from Lower Bavaria collapsed and died at the Hochstaufen in the Berchtesgaden region. The Bavarian Red Cross (BRK) reported that he likely collapsed due to an acute illness, rather than falling. Attempts to revive him by fellow hikers and a doctor were unsuccessful.
Climber falls with broken rocks
Earlier, a 60-year-old man was injured when he fell several meters while climbing the Sternschnuppe route at the Feuerhörndl on the northwest side of the Reiteralpe. The man from Salzburg was struck by a broken rock on his foot and lower leg, and he was taken to a clinic for treatment.
On Friday afternoon, a 13-year-old boy was swept away by the current of the Weißach near the Buchenegger waterfalls in Oberstaufen in the Allgäu. He became trapped between a tree and a rock in a narrow section of the river and had to be rescued by helicopter. He sustained only minor injuries.
