Voting Occurrences - Several locations see an increase in the influence of AfD.
The far-right party, AfD, has seen a boost in votes across all city and district councils in the southwest region during the European elections. The highest support was in Pforzheim city district with 23.2% of the votes, as reported by the Statistical Office in Fellbach on Monday. Conversely, the lowest support was in the Freiburg im Breisgau city district with 5.9%.
Taking a closer look, there are more districts where the AfD are leading. For example, in the Rems-Murr district's Spiegelberg community, the party has the highest vote share with 29.7%, surpassing the CDU with 26.9%. Similarly, in Grombach in the Freudenstadt district, the AfD got the highest vote share at 30.5%, but just fell short of the CDU with 33.0%. However, the mail-in votes for Grombach are yet to be calculated and will be counted centrally, so the final results can vary slightly.
The CDU performed their best at the city and district council level in the Sigmaringen district, where Minister President Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) is based. On the other hand, their lowest support was in Freiburg im Breisgau city district with 15.4%.
A disappointing turn of events for the government party
Meanwhile, the environmental party, Greens, are seeing a downward trend across all 44 city and district councils. They achieved their highest vote share in Freiburg im Breisgau city district (30.3%), and their lowest in the Neckar-Odenwald district (7.6%).
The social-democrat party, the SPD, gained their best result in Mannheim city district with 16.5% of the votes, while their worst was in the Biberach district with 7.5%. The Free Democratic Party (FDP) attained their highest number of votes in the Reutlingen district (8.9%), and their lowest in the same Neckar-Odenwald district (4.4%).
The CDU has emerged as the clear winner in the Baden-Württemberg's European elections with 32.0% of the votes, according to the provisional final result. The Greens, on the other hand, saw a significant decline, securing only 13.8% of the vote and moving to third place.
The AfD has become the second most prominent political force with 14.7% of the votes, despite several media reports about possible ties between AfD candidates and Russia and China. The SPD gained 11.6% of the votes, as per the information present, and the FDP, 6.8%. A newer party, Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht, which was established in January, has gone from zero to 4.5% of the votes.
