Several hundred kilograms of ghost nets recovered off Rügen

According to activists from the Society to Save Dolphins, they have retrieved several hundred kilograms of old fishing nets from a sunken buoy off the coast of Rügen in the Baltic Sea in recent weeks. These so-called ghost nets are dangerous for the marine environment, the Munich-based organization announced on Wednesday. Fish caught in them died in agony.

According to the information, the fairway buoy sank eight kilometers off the coast of Rügen years ago. As a result, more and more ghost nets became entangled in it. The tangle of nets and ropes weighed several tons. Partly due to the cramped situation at the buoy, it was not possible to remove all the nets there. The operation is therefore to be continued in the spring. Now the weather is getting too rough.

According to the company, it has recovered more than ten tons of ghost nets from the Baltic Sea since 2019. However, around 10,000 nets and net parts are added every year, a spokesperson estimated.

The retired ghost nets pose a significant threat to the marine environment, particularly to marine life in the oceans around Rügen. Efforts to remove these nets are crucial to prevent further harm and ensure the health of the ocean ecosystems.
