Multiple fires in Schleswig-Holstein kept the fire departments busy overnight. The largest fire broke out on a field in Bilsen (Circuit Pinneberg), where around 700 hay bales were ablaze by midnight, according to a spokesperson for the fire department. The round bales were completely destroyed.

On the meadow, the bales burned for almost 150 meters according to the firefighters. No buildings were at risk. To extinguish the fire, the bales were pulled apart with tractors and wheel loaders, and the hay was submerged in water using two excavators. Afterwards, these were spread out on the meadow and finally extinguished by the fire department.

The fire department was on site with more than 200 firefighters, who were supplied by the Red Cross. The fire is likely to be extinguished only by early Saturday afternoon. The cause of the fire was initially unclear.

Fire in Heide

In Heide (Circuit Dithmarschen), a fire broke out in an apartment building, according to a spokesperson for the fire department. No one was injured. Several residents had to be rescued from their apartments by the emergency services. Further details and the cause of the fire were initially unknown.

High property damage in warehouse fire

Furthermore, a fire in a warehouse in Niebuell (Circuit North Friesland) caused damage of around 400,000 euros. The hall, where thatch was stored, burned down completely, said a spokesperson for the police. The high damage was also caused by several telehandlers parked in the building. Further details and the cause of the fire remained initially unclear.

The emergency services also had to intervene in other incidents, such as a house fire inNeumünster. Other structures, including a shed, were affected.

In the aftermath of the Schleswig-Holstein fires, discussions arose about the necessity of improving fire safety measures for large-scale hay storage.
