Counseling Services in Hessen Support Elderly in Daily Life

Utilizing a smartphone, connecting with like-minded individuals, learning to cook: Several counseling services in Hessen aim to specifically assist elderly people in their daily lives. This includes the unique nationwide project "Suddenly Alone" for individuals coping after the loss of their partner, as reported by the state government in response to a parliamentary query from the AfD faction in Wiesbaden. This initiative of the DHB - Netzwerk Haushalt is funded by the state with a total of 499,500 euros over two years.

"The goal is to support those affected in acquiring the necessary skills to independently manage their household and navigate daily life," the state government explained. This includes cooking classes and open meetings. The project aims to establish a network of professional and volunteer helpers.

Technical Assistance for Seniors

Another support service specifically for the elderly is "Fit im Netz – Die Smartphone-Sprechstunde" (Fit in the Net – The Smartphone Clinic) by Hessen's consumer advice center. The project started in May 2024 and offers one-on-one consultations on smartphone usage at five locations.

Similarly, the "Digital im Alter" (Digital in Old Age) project helps with technical questions. Currently, around 500 volunteers at about 60 support points are teaching basic digital tech and media skills to elderly people.

State Government's Response

  1. The "Digital im Alter" project, funded by the state government, provides technical assistance to seniors, ensuring they can effectively use digital devices like smartphones, enhancing their independence in managing daily tasks.
  2. Elderly consumers can benefit from Hessen's "Fit im Netz – Die Smartphone-Sprechstunde" project, where they receive personalized consultations on smartphone usage, thereby bridging the digital divide and improving their daily lives.
