In the Karlsruhe district, several barns caught fire. Initially, one barn was on fire, and then the flames spread to three more, the fire department reported. There was also a thick cloud of smoke. The spread of the fire to adjacent residential houses in the Woessingen district of Walzbachtal was prevented. An end to the operation was not foreseeable in the evening. Over 150 emergency services personnel were on site, it was reported.
A resident of an adjacent house was taken to hospital with suspected smoke inhalation, the fire department reported. Three other people were treated on site by the emergency services. In the evening, several specialist advisors were on site as the buildings may be at risk of collapse. The police initially suspected a technical defect as the cause of the fire. No information on the extent of the damage was available.
Firefighting efforts continued throughout the evening to contain the spread of the fire in the Karlsruhe district. Due to the threat of the burning barns collapsing, firefighters also needed to focus on firefighting and structural stability assessment.
