Seven homeless people have died on Hamburg's streets since March
Seven people without shelter died on the streets in Hamburg between mid-March and November this year. A further 21 people with no fixed abode died in hospitals in the Hanseatic city, as reported by the "Hamburger Morgenpost" newspaper in response to a question from the Left Party parliamentary group. According to the report, the causes of death included respiratory failure due to an infection and chronic pneumonia, acute bronchitis and drowning. In two cases, the cause was sudden cardiac death.
Last year, the Senate put the number of homeless people who had died in public up to mid-December at 23. "This is a situation that we must not get used to," said Olga Fritzsche, social expert for the left-wing parliamentary group in the Bürgerschaft, to the newspaper. "The city prides itself on having the best winter emergency program and a comprehensive aid system. At the same time, people are dying on the streets and we are seeing increasing impoverishment."
The city's comprehensive aid system is intended to address social affairs related to homelessness, yet it seems inadequate as people continue to die on the streets. The pressing issue of homelessness and social affairs requires urgent attention and improvements in Hamburg.
