Setting sail for Warnemünde Week

The countdown to the 86th edition of Warnemünde Week has begun. Visitors can expect a full program from the weekend onwards: sailing, beach sports, music and many cultural events.

Warnemünde Week starts again on Saturday with the traditional parade through the Baltic seaside resort. Sailing regattas, music, beach sports and dragon boating are then on the program for a whole week.

Sailing and folk festival - Setting sail for Warnemünde Week

For the 86th Warnemünde Week, expected visitors number in the hundreds of thousands from Saturday, July 8th to 14th. The organizers and the city of Rostock presented the program just a few days before the start directly on the beach of the Ostseebad. "From a sporting perspective, the regattas are at the highest performance level and a great advertisement. They show that athletes from all over the world value the good conditions of our sailing area," said Rostock's Mayor Eva-Maria Kröger.

"Niege Umzug", Mascot Parade and Music Festival

The colorful procession "Niege Umzug" is the traditional opening event on Saturday with over 2,500 participants, many of whom are volunteers and associations. Three brass bands and an orchestra are also involved. In addition, a small mascot parade will be offered, as well as historical figures. On July 11th, the "Open-Air am Meer – Rauch auf dem Wasser" music festival is on the schedule.

For the actual highlight of the Warnemünde Week, the sailing competitions, top sailors from all over the world are expected to measure themselves against each other in regattas. The Sports Director of the Warnemünde Week, Peter Ramcke, is particularly looking forward to the World Championship of the Zoom 8 class, a small, light one-handed dinghy for children and young people. "This is an interesting class that used to have large fields. I oversaw the last WM in Germany in 2005, and now it's back," said Ramcke.

Sailing at the highest level

In total, 15 regattas of various sailing classes, events of the 1st and 2nd German Sailing League, and the Sailing Champions League are on the schedule. Over 800 athletes, mostly women, had already registered by early June. Represented are 28 countries from all five continents. The lively conclusion is provided at the end of the weekend on July 13th/14th by the Dragon Boat Festival at the southern Alten Strom in Warnemünde.
