Theft - Senior citizens robbed - trio of fraudsters on trial in Dresden

Over a period of months, they allegedly spied on elderly people withdrawing money and then robbed or stole from them. Two women and one man are on trial at Dresden District Court for gang robbery, gang theft and computer fraud, accused of a total of 168 crimes with a total loss of around 60,000 euros. At the start of the trial on Friday, the main defendant and a 57-year-old woman confessed during a plea bargain, while the second woman denied the allegations.

According to the indictment, the accused, who were caught in the act on March 1, withdrew money dozens of times in Poland with the stolen cards and made cashless purchases. They are said to have several previous convictions in Germany and abroad. The public prosecutor's office assumes that there are other accomplices.

His client came up with the business model and was "on the road with others", explained the 52-year-old's defense lawyer. It was important to him that no violence was used. The chamber gave the main defendant a prison sentence of around five years and the co-defendant around four years. The woman also apologized in court.

The third defendant refused to plea bargain, saying that she was not present or "only physically" present, had nothing to do with the crimes and only received 400 euros once. When questioned, she admitted that the razor blades seized from her had also been used to cut open the victims' pockets.

The trial is scheduled until the beginning of March 2024. The court hopes that the confessions will spare the elderly victims from having to testify - many of them were over 80 years old and the oldest was 91.
