Serious rail accident - Senior citizen hit by train at level crossing - woman dead
A senior citizen was hit by a train and fatally injured at a level crossing in Elgersburg (Ilm-District). The 83-year-old woman succumbed to her severe injuries at the scene, according to a spokesperson for the Federal Police. The paramedics attempted to revive her, but were unsuccessful.
The police initially assumed it was an accident, said the spokesperson. Preliminary findings indicated that the barriers were down at the time of the accident, yet the senior citizen had still crossed the tracks.
The locomotive driver was in shock and had to be removed. The section was temporarily closed between Arnstadt and Zella-Mehlis in both directions. Buses were provided for passengers of the Regional Transport, according to the police spokesperson. Previously, MDR had reported on the accident.
The investigation into the Rachel crossing accident in Elgersburg, Thuringia, is being handled by the Federal Police. Unfortunately, similar accidents have been reported on the railroad in the past. Following the fatal incident involving a woman and a train, the Federal Police are urging caution at all level crossings.
