New Year's Eve - Senator informs politicians: Ban on firecrackers on Sonnenallee

Due to the firecrackers thrown at police officers last New Year's Eve in Berlin-Neukölln and current clashes over the Middle East war, the police are apparently planning another ban zone for fireworks, according to media reports. According to the "Tagespiegel", firecrackers and rockets are to be banned at the beginning of Sonnenallee from Hermannplatz and in side streets. There have already been bans on fireworks in Schöneberg and Alexanderplatz in recent years.

On Friday afternoon, Interior Senator Iris Spranger (SPD) wants to inform the interior politicians of all parliamentary groups in the Berlin House of Representatives about the preparations for the upcoming New Year's Eve and the measures to prevent renewed outbreaks of violence.

A large number of police officers will have to be deployed to cordon off and control no-go zones. In addition, the police will hardly be able to prevent people from moving to the surrounding areas. In previous years, Sonnenallee and Hermannplatz were among the places where numerous permitted and prohibited firecrackers exploded from the early evening and rockets were fired across the street and at cars. In addition, aggressive demonstrations for Palestine and against Israel were concentrated there after the Islamist terrorist attack on Israel in October. The topic could also play a role on New Year's Eve.

Spranger had announced that significantly more police officers would be on duty that night than a year ago in order to prevent riots in some problem neighborhoods, as was the case a year ago. However, politicians and police are expecting a heated atmosphere again this year in North Neukölln, Gropiusstadt, the High-Deck-Siedlung and parts of Schöneberg, Gesundbrunnen and Spandau. Extensive preparations for the turn of the year have therefore been underway for months. The protection of the fire department in particular is to play a major role.
