Senate wants commissioner for refugee affairs
The Berlin Senate is considering appointing a special representative for refugee issues. According to dpa information from CDU circles, the governing mayor Kai Wegner has made this suggestion. The background to this is the pressure on the black-red governing coalition to make progress with the accommodation and integration of refugees. There had already been a similar function in 2015, when the number of refugees from Syria and Afghanistan increased significantly. The "Berliner Morgenpost" first reported on the issue.
Wegner (CDU) and Social Affairs Senator Cansel Kiziltepe (SPD) jointly head the Senate task force on the accommodation and integration of refugees. The new crisis manager could support them and be linked to the Social and Integration Administration on the one hand and the Senate Chancellery on the other.
According to the newspaper, a revision of the Tempelhofer Feld Act is also pending, which does not permit development on the site of the former airport. The Senate therefore wants to initiate an amendment to the law as soon as possible to allow further accommodation for refugees there. According to information from CDU circles, the issue will be discussed again on Monday and will be dealt with at the next Senate meeting on Tuesday.
The proposal to appoint a special representative for refugee issues by the Berlin Senate aligns with the Federal Government's responsibility in managing migration and refugee affairs, as several Federal states have their own commissioners for these matters. This potential new commissioner could play a pivotal role in planning refugee accommodations, such as those at Tempelhofer Feld, which requires a revision of the current legislation.
