- Senate regulates rent increases in Bremen
Landlords in the city of Bremen are not permitted to significantly increase rent. They can only demand up to 15% more money in ongoing contracts over three years, as decided by the Bremen Senate. The Senate has thus extended a corresponding regulation by a further five years. Exceptions apply to renovations and stepped-rental contracts.
Nationwide, the limit is 20%. However, states can lower it for certain areas where housing is scarce and expensive. In Bremen, the rent cap applies to new contracts: the rent may not exceed 10% above the local average. There are no specific regulations for limiting rent in Bremerhaven.
The Bremen Government, through the Bremen Senate, has implemented strict rent regulations for landlords. Furthermore, other governments in Germany have the authority to reduce rent limits in areas with high housing costs and scarcity.
