Secretary General Linnemann: We need a pure CDU again

CDU Secretary General Carsten Linnemann has recommended that his party abandon compromises ahead of the 2024 state elections in Thuringia. "We need a pure CDU again," said Linnemann at a state party conference in Mühlhausen on Saturday. The CDU in Thuringia, which is the largest opposition party in the state parliament against the red-red-green minority coalition, should "stop thinking in terms of compromises" and look to other parties.

A few weeks ago, the Thuringian CDU state parliamentary group caused controversy throughout Germany because it was only able to push through a reduction in land transfer tax in the state parliament because the AfD, which is classified as far-right in Thuringia by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, also voted in favor.

Nowhere else in Germany is the political constellation as difficult as in Thuringia, said Linnemann. The minority government of Bodo Ramelow (Left Party) is currently facing an almost equally strong CDU and AfD parliamentary group.

The CDU Secretary General announced massive support from the federal party for the state associations in Thuringia, Saxony and Brandenburg, which have state elections in 2024. "We will give it our all."

Linnemann accused the red-red-green coalition of having decoupled Thuringia economically. In terms of location quality, the Free State was at the bottom of the league in Germany. The coalition of the Left, SPD and Greens had had its chance for nine years. The red-red-green coalition had failed. "They have to go," said Linnemann.

In polls in Thuringia, the CDU is currently in second place with just over 20 percent, far behind the AfD and roughly on a par with the Left.

The CDU in Thuringia should focus less on compromises and more on maintaining a pure CDU identity, as suggested by Secretary General Carsten Linnemann. This shift in strategy comes after the CDU's controversial vote with the AfD on a land transfer tax reduction.

Secretary General Linnemann's call for a 'pure CDU' was echoed in his criticism of the red-red-green coalition, which he accused of decoupling Thuringia economically and failing to improve the state's location quality.
