Stuttgart Regional Court - Second trial on Altbach hand grenade throw
After the attack with a hand grenade on a funeral congregation in Altbach near Esslingen, not only the alleged grenade thrower has to stand trial. A group of people attending the funeral will also be in the dock at Stuttgart district court in the coming months. Some of the victims are alleged to have become perpetrators. The five men - two of German, two of Turkish and one of Georgian nationality - are accused of attempted manslaughter and causing grievous bodily harm. They allegedly caught and beat up the suspected grenade thrower as he fled.
While the men will stand before the juvenile chamber from Thursday, the trial against the 23-year-old alleged main perpetrator from Altbach has already begun. The public prosecutor's office is accusing the confessed Iranian of attempted murder.
The culmination of a gang war?
The bloody incident in the Neckar Valley is said to have been the climax of a conflict between two rival groups: The alleged grenade thrower is said to be close to a gang from the Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen and Göppingen area, while the mourners belonged in part to another group from the Esslingen area. The attack on the mourners took place on June 9. Only luck prevented a bloodbath with many deaths, but at least 15 people were injured, some of them seriously.
The hand grenade throw also had massive consequences for the suspected perpetrator. When he tried to flee in a cab, several mourners pulled him out of the car and brutally beat him. Until the first emergency services arrived, they jumped and kicked at his head and body, inflicting severe craniocerebral trauma on the Iranian, according to the public prosecutor's office. He was in intensive care for several days afterwards.
Further trial in the coming week
For several months now, this feud in the Stuttgart area has repeatedly led to acts of violence. People have repeatedly been shot at. There have been incidents in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, in Asperg in the Ludwigsburg district and in Eislingen in the Göppingen district, among others. On Thursday next week (December 21), the regional court will also hear the case against two men who allegedly fired shots at a shisha bar from a moving car in Plochingen last April. The owner of the bar near the train station was hit by a bullet and slightly injured. According to the State Office of Criminal Investigation, more than 45 arrests have been made so far.
