Second referendum in Chile on a new constitution
Polling stations opened at 8.00 am on Sunday and were due to close at 6.00 pm (10.00 pm CET). The first results were expected a few hours later. The left-wing President Gabriel Boric had announced in advance that the draft now on the table would be his last attempt to reform the constitution. The outcome of the referendum is also seen as a popular vote on the policies of the head of state, who came to power in 2021 at the age of 35.
In a referendum in September 2022, a clear majority of just under 62% of Chileans voted against a progressive draft text for a new constitution, which included more environmental protection and more rights for the indigenous population. This was a bitter defeat for Boric. The new text that has now been presented is much more conservative. Nevertheless, the latest polls predicted another rejection.

The referendum on Sunday marks the second attempt at constitutional reform in Chile under President Gabriel Boric. Despite a conservative shift in the new constitution draft, many predict a repeat of September's 62% rejection vote. Polling stations opened at 8 am local time, with results expected hours later. Boric's government's approach to constitutional reform will likely be seen as a reflection of his political stance. The urn containing the votes will symbolize the voice of the nation, both for and against the new constitution. The outcome of the referendum, taking place in Chile, will have significant implications for the nation's future constitution.
