Second aerial bomb found in Kiel's Schwentine estuary
Another aerial bomb has been found in the Schwentine during exploratory work by an explosive ordnance recovery company. An American 500-kilo bomb had already been discovered nearby a few days ago, according to a police spokeswoman in Kiel. The new find is believed to be a British 250-kilo bomb. Both unexploded bombs are to be defused on Sunday.
According to the police, around 7300 people will have to leave their homes in the Dietrichsdorf district of Kiel for the defusing operation - the already defined exclusion radius will not change as a result of the new discovery. The area around the mouth of the Schwentinemündung is affected by the closure. For the defusing operation, both bombs are to be moved to the quayside using lifting balloons.
Residents must leave their homes by 11.00 am. Crew members of nearby ships must also disembark. The police expect the operation to last several hours. Alternative accommodation for people who cannot be accommodated elsewhere has been set up in the Ellerbeker school. The police want to provide information about the operation on social networks such as X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook.
The discovery of another unexploded bomb in Kiel's Schwentine estuary serves as a reminder of the emergencies that can stem from the consequences of war. The evacuation of nearly 7300 residents and crew members from nearby ships highlights the significant impact such emergencies can have on civilian populations.
