Seawolves have to tremble about advancing in the Europe Cup
Despite winning their final group game, the Rostock Seawolves still have to worry about progressing in the Fiba Europe Cup. An 86:81 (46:35) win against Jonava CBet on Tuesday evening was not enough for the German Basketball League club to oust the Lithuanians from first place in Group C in a direct duel. Rostock must now wait for the games in the other groups on Wednesday evening. Only then will they know whether their record is good enough to qualify for the next round as one of the six best runners-up in the group.
The best scorers against Jonava were Derrick Alston and Chevez Goodwin with 15 points each. Head coach Christian Held's team showed from the outset that it was determined to achieve the 19-point victory needed to secure first place and was not dependent on the result between Karhu and Larnaca on Wednesday. The hosts were already 25:16 ahead after the first quarter.
Rostock also got off to a good start in the second half, in which it quickly extended its lead to 16 points. However, the home side then lost the thread. Jonava, on the other hand, scored almost at will and briefly took the lead in the third quarter. Rostock only dominated again in the final period and at least secured second place in the group with the win.
Despite their strong performance and securing second place in Group C, the Rostock Seawolves still need to monitor their progress in the Fiba Europe Cup. Regardless of the outcomes in other groups on Wednesday evening, their performance in the tournament so far places them as one of the contenders for the next round in the Fiba Europe Cup, with the Seawolves being represented in the Basketball competition.
