LKA investigates - Searches after hand grenade thrown at mourners

After a hand grenade was thrown at a mourning congregation in Altbach near Stuttgart, police and the State Office of Criminal Investigation searched the home of a 32-year-old man. According to the investigators on Wednesday, the man is said to have been involved in an attack on the thrower of the hand grenade in June. The 32-year-old was released again due to a lack of urgent suspicion. A trial against an Iranian who is alleged to have thrown the hand grenade will begin this Thursday at Stuttgart Regional Court on charges including attempted murder in 15 cases.

According to the investigators, the background to the crime is a feud between two rival groups in the region that has been raging for many months. In this context, the Stuttgart public prosecutor's office and the Baden-Württemberg State Office of Criminal Investigation also announced that three other men had been arrested. Investigators had discovered DNA traces in connection with shots fired in Schorndorf on October 23 and a plastic bag containing a submachine gun, a revolver and a hand grenade. The suspects, aged 25, 26 and 55, were remanded in custody.

The authorities also referred to a fire in a restaurant in Nürtingen last Saturday. They are investigating whether there is a connection with the clashes between the rival groups. For this reason, the State Office of Criminal Investigation has taken over the investigation in coordination with the Stuttgart public prosecutor's office.

According to the State Office of Criminal Investigation, more than 40 arrests have been made so far in this context. According to earlier information, the causes of the conflict are complex: "However, the need of the predominantly young adults to belong to the group appears to be of particular importance," it said. According to the investigation, it is primarily about the search for recognition and affirmation within the groups, the pursuit of a criminal career and alleged defamation. The members of the groups have different ethnic origins. "Among them are people of Turkish nationality or descent and Kurds of Turkish descent are a larger group."
