Searchers persist in seeking survivors from the submerged high-end yacht that capsized near Sicily.
The opulent yacht "Bayesian," housing a team of ten sailors and twenty-two vacationers, encountered wreckage close to Porticello, Sicily's shoreline, during Monday's wee hours. As per news broadcasts, the catastrophe was precipitated by a tempest at sea, a whirlwind combining ocean water and powerful winds. Seventeen individuals were successfully retrieved from the water's grasp. One passenger was discovered deceased, while six others remain unaccounted for.
Among the unreachable are technology mogul Mike Lynch, affectionately nicknamed the "British Bill Gates," and his young 18-year-old daughter Hannah. Additionally, Jonathan Bloomer, a high-ranking executive at Morgan Stanley International, and his spouse Judy were reported missing by the bank. However, Lynch's wife Angela Bacares, who managed to escape the disaster, was transported to a hospital with mild injuries.
According to Italian press outlets, Lynch's guests aboard the yacht. The businessman had reportedly spent the occasion celebrating his recent acquittal in a multi-billion-dollar fraud case on the yacht.
Lynch was exonerated of fraud allegations in the United States in June, concerning his software enterprise Autonomy's sale to Hewlett-Packard. He was accused of altering documents and inflating his company's revenue. As per "The Sunday Times," Lynch's estimated net worth, previously an advisor to the government, amounted to approximately 587 million euros.
The "Bayesian" was constructed in Tuscany in 2008, and underwent renovations in 2020. As per the site "Charter World," it held the title of the world's tallest aluminum sailing vessel mast, standing proudly at a height of 75 meters.
Karsten Boerner, a sea captain operating another yacht nearby, offered testimony to "Corriere della Sera" newspaper, describing the scene as chaotic that fateful night. Struggling to maintain his vessel's equilibrium, he detected the "Bayesian'"s mast swaying before it met an untimely end.
The following is added to the investigation: Officials from Mike Lynch's legal team have stated that they will be conducting their own inquiry to determine the causes of the yacht's sinking and the whereabouts of the missing passengers.
In light of the disaster, it was reported that the Italian coastguard has suggested implementing stricter safety regulations for luxury yachts operating in the Mediterranean Sea.
