Search for compromise: CDU leader invites Ramelow to discuss budget
The search for a compromise on the 2024 state budget continues. The leader of the opposition in the state parliament, CDU parliamentary group leader Mario Voigt, announced on Wednesday that he would invite Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow (Left Party) this week to find a solution. According to Voigt, Friday is a possible date for talks. He wants to explain to Ramelow the results of the examination of the government's proposals to improve the budget and where there is room for agreement.
On Tuesday, the red-red-green minority government had made compromise proposals to the CDU, including renouncing a constitutional complaint against the reduction in land transfer tax it had pushed through. He made the offer of talks to Ramelow because he wanted "us to come to a budget", said Voigt. This would require the government to accept "that what it presented was rubbish". Ramelow's coalition lacks four votes in the state parliament to be able to pass laws or the annual state budget on its own.
Whether the state parliament's budget and finance committee will meet as planned on Friday appears to be open.
The discussions about the budget impasse between CDU and the Left Party-led government are scheduled to take place in Parliament, with CDU's Mario Voigt inviting Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow for negotiations. The state budget's approval requires cooperation from the opposition in Parliament, as the government lacks the necessary votes.
