Procedure - Search for candidates for university medicine: clarity by Christmas
In the search for a new scientific director for the Mainz University Medical Center, the decisive course should be set by shortly before the end of the year. "We will have clarity about the process by Christmas," Science and Health Minister Clemens Hoch (SPD) told the German Press Agency in Mainz. Many discussions would be held with candidates from the first selection process. If these are unsuccessful, the position will be re-advertised.
The Rhineland-Palatinate Minister of Science and Health was confident that the post would be filled by April 1 next year as planned. "If we were to re-advertise, the deadline of April 1 would be very ambitious. That's why my plan A is that we talk to candidates who have already been in the process."
Thomas Kamradt, the candidate originally intended for the position of Chief Scientific Officer at the Mainz University Medical Center, recently withdrew for personal reasons. The Scientific Director and Dean at Jena University Hospital was to become part of a new management team at Mainz University Medical Center, which has recently been plagued by numerous internal conflicts.
On January 1, 2024, Ralf Kiesslich will become the new Chief Medical Officer and Chairman of the Management Board, succeeding Norbert Pfeiffer. He comes from the Helios Dr. Horst Schmidt Clinics in Wiesbaden. Waltraud Kreutz-Gers, who was previously Chancellor of Johannes Gutenberg University (JGU) Mainz, took over the position of Commercial Director on November 1 of this year. The contract of Chief Nursing Officer Marion Hahn had been extended until the end of January 2025.
In recent months, there had been deep divisions, particularly between the former Chief Commercial Officer Christian Elsner and the heads of individual clinics under the umbrella of the University Medical Center. Elsner left the hospital at the end of September despite a contract running until 2026 and received a severance payment of 500,000 euros. The new Executive Board must therefore also ensure a more peaceful coexistence at the University Medical Center.
