After escape - Search for an escaped man from detention is ongoing

After escaping from a Correctional Facility in Moringen near Northeim, in lower Saxony, the search is ongoing. A police spokesperson stated today that the man is still on the run and the manhunt is underway. The man has been missing for nearly a week, and according to police, there is no danger to the public. In the correctional facility, offenders with addiction or psychological issues are housed under court order. When his disappearance was noticed, a helicopter and a drone were used to search for him.

The man is reported to have left the correctional facility through the double door, and an awaiting car took him away, according to the lower Saxony Social Ministry. The exact details of his escape are still under investigation. Initial measures include "further securing the problematic gate area." Additional measures are being considered.

Since November 2020 in Moringen

According to the lower Saxony Justice Ministry, the man was sentenced to a prison term of four years and six months in Moringen Correctional Facility after committing a particularly serious armed robbery at a betting shop in Hanover.

The suspect is reportedly 1.85 meters tall, slim, has a tattoo on his left arm, brown eyes and hair, and a scar under his left eyebrow. The police are asking for any information from the public regarding his whereabouts. If you see him directly, please call the emergency number.

Multiple comparable cases

In the recent past, there have been several similar cases: In November, a fugitive inmate from the correctional facility was arrested in France, more than four months after his escape. The 33-year-old man was being held for grievous bodily harm and extortion in Moringen. In September 2022, the police apprehended a fleeing inmate in Celle after several days on the run. The 53-year-old man had not returned to the correctional facility after being granted permission to leave.

  1. The search for the escaped prisoner has expanded beyond Moringen, with lower Saxony's police force also investigating potential sightings in Hanover due to his history of criminality.
  2. Yesterday, a helicopter was dispatched from Hannover to assist in the ongoing search in the vicinity of Northeim, as the area's Lower Saxony police continue to prioritize measurable enforcement efforts.
  3. While the escaped offender's car was not found during the aerial search, local authorities have requested that residents in the area be on high alert and report any suspicious vehicles, as the suspect is known to have access to an auto.
  4. The emergence of this incident has sparked concerns within the prison system of Lower Saxony, with officials discussing further security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future, such as installing additional surveillance equipment in problematic areas.
  5. However, despite the intense search efforts, the man remains at large, with no confirmed sightings or reports of his whereabouts since his escape from the Northeim correctional facility last week.
