Scientists register fresh high temperature in the North Sea near Heligoland.
In 2023, the AWI recorded the highest water temperature ever measured on their German high sea island, dating back to their long-term measurement series since 1962. Located in the German Bight, this area has experienced a significant temperature rise since the '90s, as per Karen Wiltshire, head of the Biological Institute of the AWI. As a shallow sea, the North Sea is warming up rapidly.
The AWI scientists attribute the increased surface temperatures in the North Sea and other seas to the global climate change, as they believe it to be "one of the main reasons" according to their statements. The World Meteorological Organization disclosed in March that 90% of all oceans faced at least one heatwave in the previous year. This means that around one-third of the world's seas were warmer than average on every single day in 2023.

The Alfred Wegener Institute, based in Bremerhaven, reported the 'Temperature record' in the North Sea near Heligoland in 2023, surpassing their oldest records from 1962. Over the years, 'Researchers' at the institute have observed a substantial temperature rise in the German Bight, a region located in the North Sea, as highlighted by Karen Wiltshire, head of their Biological Institute. This significant warming trend has been a notable feature in the 'German Bight' since the '90s.
