Schwesig: Reception of refugees is reaching its limits
According to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Minister President Manuela Schwesig, the reception of refugees in local authorities is reaching its limits. Not everyone who makes their way to Germany is allowed to come, said the SPD politician in the state parliament in Schwerin on Friday.
In the state parliament debate, Schwesig addressed the latest resolutions passed by the federal and state governments. The Minister President emphasized that not all problems had been solved, but that these were important decisions.
During consultations on migration this week, the federal and state governments had agreed, among other things, on a change in the distribution of costs, but also on restrictions to benefits for asylum seekers, the introduction of a payment card and the examination of asylum procedures in third countries outside of Europe.
The agreement on funding should not be played down, said the SPD politician. According to Schwesig, the state will fully support the municipalities financially. "We also expect this attitude from the federal government."
She went on to say that asylum procedures were needed at the EU's external borders. "The aim must be to catch the smugglers before they reach the border."
Given the current situation, some municipalities in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are struggling to cope with the influx of refugees, as stated by Minister President Manuela Schwesig. To alleviate this burden, Schwesig guaranteed that the state will provide full financial support to these struggling municipalities.
