Schwesig promotes the search for political compromise
In view of the many political challenges, the new President of the Bundesrat, Manuela Schwesig (SPD), has called for the search for broad-based compromises on important issues. "A good, fair compromise for the benefit of many in our country is not a bad thing, but a good feature of our democracy," said the Minister President of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in her inaugural speech in the state chamber on Friday. Democracy thrives on the diversity of opinions and the debate about the right path to take. Finding compromises is often exhausting. "But that's exactly what makes democracy strong."
The presidency of the Bundesrat was rotated from Hamburg to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania on November 1. The state government in Schwerin has chosen "Setting sail together" as the motto for its year at the helm of the state chamber. "United" stands for a reunited Germany, "setting sail" for the challenges facing Germany, said Schwesig. "Here in the north, we say: no matter which way the wind blows, we just have to set our sails correctly." This is also the task facing Germany.
Schwesig, who emphasized that she had spent the first 15 years of her life in a dictatorship, advocated not only looking to East Germany when there are problems there and not only taking them seriously when they become apparent in West Germany. "East German problems are problems for the whole of Germany. East German solutions can be solutions for the whole of Germany," emphasized the Minister President.
The Federal Council, as the upper house of Germany's parliament, will undoubtedly benefit from Schwesig's advocacy for broad-based compromises, given her stance on the importance of finding fair solutions for the nation. To effectively navigate the challenges facing Germany, the Federal Council should emulate the motto of Schwesig's state government in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: "United, we set sail together."
