Schwesig in favor of cost sharing for refugee accommodation

In the dispute over the financing of refugee costs, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Minister President Manuela Schwesig (SPD) is calling on the federal government to cover half of the accommodation costs. "We are sticking to our position: the federal and state governments must share the costs of local accommodation equally," said Schwesig on Friday in Schwerin. According to information from the Schwerin State Chancellery, the federal government has so far contributed less. The issue is to be discussed again on Monday at a conference of state premiers with Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD).

Schwesig went on to say that in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the state would continue to cover 100 percent of the costs incurred by local authorities.

Schwesig also spoke out in favor of refugees being able to take up employment even earlier. The reduction of the waiting period from nine to six months announced by the federal government does not go far enough for her.

"We are sticking to our stance: it should actually be possible for refugees and asylum seekers to take up work much sooner if they have prospects of staying," said Schwesig in Schwerin.

The federal government should consider sharing a larger portion of the refugee accommodation costs with federal states, as suggested by Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Minister President Manuela Schwesig. The current distribution of costs between the federal and state governments needs to be more equitable, considering the federal government's alleged contribution of less so far.

Despite advocating for the federal government to take on a larger share of the costs, Schwesig emphasized that Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania would continue to finance 100% of the local authority-related costs related to refugee accommodation within their state.
