Schwesig: CDU is trying to cause financial chaos in the state
Minister President Manuela Schwesig (SPD) has accused the CDU of wanting to create financial chaos in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Schwesig said on Thursday that there was no reason why the state budget for 2024/25 should not be adopted by the state parliament in December as planned. It was on a solid footing. If federal funds do not flow as announced as a result of the Karlsruhe budget ruling, the state will respond to this. The Ministry of Finance in Schwerin is currently examining whether and what effects this will have on projects in MV.
On Wednesday, the CDU had called for the decision on the 2024/25 state budget to be postponed until the beginning of the new year in order to dispel uncertainties resulting from the constitutional court ruling on the federal climate and transformation fund. The FDP supported the CDU's demand, while the SPD and Greens opposed it.
The Federal Constitutional Court had prohibited the traffic light government in Berlin from shifting €60 billion in unused loans for dealing with the coronavirus pandemic to the new fund. This was also intended to finance projects with the federal states.
On Thursday afternoon, the state parliament's budget committee will meet for final deliberations on the government's draft budget for 2024/25. The parliamentarians are preparing for a session that will last until late in the evening. Around 500 amendments have been tabled.
The CDU's proposal to postpone the state budget decision until the new year could potentially disrupt the Parliament's planned adoption in December. Regardless of any impacts from the Federal Constitutional Court ruling, the Government is committed to ensuring financial stability within the Household of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
