Federal Council - Schwesig announces trip to Brazil

Federal Council President Manuela Schwesig (SPD) plans to visit Brazil next year as part of a business delegation. The Minister President of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern made the announcement on Monday following talks with Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Berlin. Lula is in Germany until Wednesday on the occasion of a German-Brazilian government meeting.

Schwesig reported that she had spoken to Lula about climate protection and the energy crisis. "It is impressive what an ambitious agenda Brazil has set itself for sustainable development as well as climate and environmental protection." She agreed with Lula that the change in the economy, agriculture and society necessary for climate protection must be socially cushioned.

Brazil is an important partner for Germany in Latin America, emphasized Schwesig. German business is calling for the free trade agreement between the South American economic community Mercosur and the EU to be concluded quickly. The EU has been in talks with Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay for years. However, an agreement in principle from 2019 has not been implemented due to ongoing concerns - for example regarding rainforest protection.
