Schwesig: Acceleration law important for mobile communications

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Minister President Manuela Schwesig (SPD) has welcomed the agreement between the federal and state governments on faster planning and approval procedures. "The package is a great gain for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the whole of Germany," said Schwesig on Monday evening. It is about transport projects, fast internet, social housing and the expansion of renewable energies. "For example, it is important for us to speed up the construction of mobile phone masts in rural areas and geothermal energy projects."

Environmental associations had previously sharply criticized the federal and state plans. They fear that it could be at the expense of nature if regulations for environmental impact assessments and species protection are changed.

According to the government in Schwerin, there will be no environmental impact assessment for the liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal planned on the coast of Rügen. This is already permitted by the LNG Acceleration Act (LNGG).

The Federal Government and Federal states reached an agreement on expediting planning and approval processes, which is beneficial for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the entire nation. This includes expediting the construction of mobile phone masts in rural areas, a concern for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Minister President Manuela Schwesig, as well as promoting geothermal energy projects.

Despite this, environmental associations have expressed concerns about potential negative impacts on nature if regulations for environmental impact assessments and species protection are altered in the name of faster development.
