Nearly two months prior to a monumental choice, the state capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Schwerin, filed an application to join the UNESCO World Heritage ranks. Schwerin plans to become part of the elite group with its Residence Ensemble, which features a total of 38 buildings and locations. The final decision on Schwerin's application will be reached in New Delhi, India, during the UNESCO Committee's meeting in July 21st-31st.

The focus of this year's World Heritage Day remains centered on "Experiencing Diversity." The Hanseatic cities of Wismar and Stralsund have supplemented the festivities by coordinating a bus transfer between the two cities.

Germany's UNESCO Commission, in partnership with the World Heritage Sites Germany association, launched UNESCO World Heritage Day in 2005. It's observed annually on the first Sunday in June across Germany.
