- Schweitzer: Summer break is a sensible political culture
No Landtag sessions and few appointments with ministers in Mainz: The summer break in the state capital, according to Minister President Alexander Schweitzer, "is just right for a sensible political culture." "That we don't try to engage each other in the summer with topics that wouldn't be otherwise," said the SPD politician to the German Press Agency in Mainz.
It's good that the Members of Parliament also take time in the summer to be with their families, emphasized the long-time faction leader.
"This is one of the most unusual summers I believe I will ever remember," said Schweitzer. The planned trip to Ruegen with his wife, two school-age sons, and the family dog "Mimi" had to be canceled at the last minute. "I didn't want to be almost ten hours away by train from Rhineland-Palatinate," said the 50-year-old.
For him, the summer of 2024 is one of "hard and intense work." Schweitzer was elected new Minister President after the unforeseen resignation of Malu Dreyer (also SPD) on July 10.
Despite the summer break, the state capital still hosts plenty of social events. Many locals look forward to attending various summer parties during this time.
Furthermore, Schweitzer expressed his regret that his family's summer vacation plans, which included a trip to Ruegen, were disrupted, making this summer one of less leisure and more work.
