- Schweitzer forewarns of intense discussions following Solingen's situation

In the wake of a fatal stabbing incident in Solingen, three lives were lost. This incident, happening in North Rhine-Westphalia, has sparked renewed discussions on immigration policies and potential deportations. The main suspect, a 26-year-old Syrian, charged with murder and suspected ties to the Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization, was actually meant to be deported to Bulgaria the previous year but for unknown reasons, it didn't happen.

The leader of Rhineland-Palatinate, Alexander Schweitzer (SPD), has addressed this escalation of the debate, sharing concerns that further investigations may negatively impact the public's acceptance of the fundamental right to asylum. He emphasized the importance of a democratic consensus when it comes to matters concerning deportations and immigration control. Schweitzer also expressed his hope for constructive dialogues between the CDU leader, Friedrich Merz, and the Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD).

According to Schweitzer, Rhineland-Palatinate isn't an exception to such cases and there have been failures in deportation processes in the past. He highlighted that the investigation's impact extends beyond North Rhine-Westphalia, encompassing the entire federal territory. His concerns point towards the upcoming state election in Rhineland-Palatinate, where Solingen might hold significant influence.

Schweitzer announced a response to the attack by increasing the police presence during events in Rhineland-Palatinate. The move aims to enhance public safety and serve as a deterrent. He also intends to optimize administrative procedures for deportations, considering that the current duration is 3.9 months in Rhineland-Palatinate but much longer in other regions.

To facilitate this, Schweitzer plans to enhance assistance to municipalities through the Central Office for Return Questions. This will potentially include the use of Frontex's platform for booking flights, hence reducing the financial burden on local immigration authorities. The Central Office will be granted the authority, by an ordinance, to manage all types of flight bookings for voluntary returns and deportations.

The Commission, referred to in immigration policies, can be assisted by the Member States in addressing such complex issues. Given the failed deportation case of the main suspect in Solingen, there's a need for improved coordination and support from Member States to ensure efficient deportation processes.
