Schweinsteiger after VfL farewell: "Many great memories"
Tobias Schweinsteiger gave an emotional farewell speech after leaving his coaching post at VfL Osnabrück. "I spoke for two or three minutes and I think the most important statement was: Everything is up to them, the individual players and the team," Schweinsteiger told the "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung" (Thursday). "Football is a players' game - they decide what they achieve." Osnabrück are in last place in the Bundesliga 2 table after 13 matchdays. The club from Lower Saxony parted ways with the 41-year-old on Tuesday.
"It was important for me to see everyone again, but no tears were shed," said Schweinsteiger. Above all, he takes "many great memories with him. It was a great year, and it was also a good year on a personal level". Schweinsteiger had spectacularly achieved promotion to the 2nd division with Osnabrück in the summer.
The team from Lower Saxony had started the second division season as outsiders. On matchday seven, Osnabrück achieved their first and so far only win of the season with a surprising 2:1 victory against Hamburger SV. Last Saturday, the promoted team lost the basement duel at Eintracht Braunschweig 2:3.
Nevertheless, relegation is still possible, said Schweinsteiger. "I would have campaigned for the signing of two or three players with leadership and sporting quality and ensured that the squad was reduced in size," said Schweinsteiger. "The size of the group (...) didn't do us any good." In future, he wants to point out even more "when there is a lack of quality in the squad".
Despite their current position in Bundesliga 2, VfL Osnabrück's manager, Tobias Schweinsteiger, highlighted his fond memories from his time with the club, having achieved promotion to the 2nd division earlier in the year. Even in Bundesliga 2's Bundesliga 2, VfL Osnabrück managed to secure a surprising 2:1 victory against Hamburger SV during the season.
