Municipalities - Schwedt receives around 1.7 million euros for urban design

Schwedt will receive a total of around 1.7 million euros from the federal and state governments for the further development of the town. Brandenburg's new State Secretary in the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Planning, Uwe Schüler, will hand over the grant notification to Mayor Annekathrin Hoppe on Wednesday, the town announced on Friday. According to the Ministry, the funds are urban development funds for the two funding programs "Social Cohesion" and "Growth and Sustainable Renewal".

The elementary school Am Waldrand is the location for the handover of the funding. The conversion of the school and its surroundings have benefited significantly from the funding in recent years. Among other things, a new assembly hall was built.

According to the Federal Ministry of Construction, Schwedt is considered a pioneer in urban redevelopment in the east because the town on the Oder had already taken on the planned adaptation of the urban structure and housing stock at the end of the 1990s. It has thus become a model for an active and successful urban redevelopment policy. The urban redevelopment in the "Am Waldrand" district also stands for this.

The city on the Oder has experienced many upheavals in recent decades. During the 1960s, a second industrialization took place. The existing tobacco industry and neighboring industries disappeared in the GDR for the development of the paper and oil processing industry. The PCK Schwedt refinery became the "lifeline". Between 2000 and 2010, the town experienced the largest wave of emigration. According to Mayor Hoppe, the population is now stable at 33,000.

Now that Russian oil via the Druzhba pipeline has been phased out since 2023, there is an employment guarantee for PCK employees, alternative oil has been ordered by the shareholders and the refinery is to be equipped for the future.
