Traffic - Schwarzatalbahn to continue operating with chip fat

Trains on the Schwarzatalbahn will continue to run on fuel made from vegetable oils such as chip fat until at least December 2031. This will emit 90 percent less CO2 than diesel, said Infrastructure Minister Susanna Karawanskij (Left Party) on Wednesday. "This is the start of the decarbonization of local rail passenger transport in Thuringia."

Trains have been running on the important tourist route between Rottenbach and Katzhütte since April as part of a pilot project using the new fuel. The railroad filling station in Katzhütte was converted accordingly. The new transport contract signed on Wednesday comes into force on Sunday and will be valid for eight years. The additional costs for the use of the fuel with the designation HVO 100 will be borne by the state.

The abbreviation HVO stands for Hydrotreated Vegetable Oils. The fuel is obtained from biological residues and waste materials, such as old vegetable fat. The trains did not have to be converted for the biofuel. Deutsche Bahn wants to completely replace diesel fuel in its 3,000 diesel locomotives by 2040.
