Bundesliga 2 - Schwartz out: Speidel "doesn't want to reinvent soccer"
Hansa Rostock wants to achieve relegation from the 2nd Bundesliga with fresh forces. Coach Alois Schwartz and assistant Dimitrios Moutas have been relieved of their duties - for the time being, junior sporting director Uwe Speidel will take over responsibility for the professionals. The Hanseatic club made the announcement at a press conference on Wednesday. "We have come to the decision that we want to start the second half of the season with a new coaching team," said Hansa's CEO Robert Marien.
The struggling team from Rostock want to use the winter break with a new coach to set the right impulses for the second half of the season in preparation. "The whole process is of course based on an ongoing sporting analysis, which we will of course carry out throughout the season," said Marien.
Rostock had picked up nine points in the first four games of the season and climbed to second place in the table. Then came the crash - after 16 match days, the Hanseatic team is in the relegation zone. "A table is always a report card," said Marien. "On the report card, it has to be said, we are in danger of being relegated at the moment. We have to work on that." Rostock recently lost 0:2 against FC Schalke 04. The team from Mecklenburg have only picked up one point in their last three games.
Initially, the picture at the Baltic Sea looked very different: Schwartz joined FC Hansa at the end of March 2023 as the third coach of the 2022/23 season and was in acute danger of relegation. He stabilized Rostock and led the Hanseatic team to a secure 13th place in the table with 41 points. However, after a brief period of success, the current season has failed to produce any success.
Now Uwe Speidel, head of youth sport, is to take over responsibility for the professionals for the time being. The 52-year-old has been with the Hanseatic club since January 1, 2021. Speidel was previously assistant coach under Andries Jonker at VfL Wolfsburg. On his first day as Rostock's interim coach, Speidel wanted to "give the lads time to get to grips with the situation today".
On Friday (6.30pm/Sky), the Hanseatic side will face SC Paderborn. "We won't be hiding there under any circumstances," said Speidel. "I believe that the lads are confident enough to take their chance, insofar as there is a new opportunity for one or two of them."
Speidel only has two sessions to prepare his team ahead of the match against the ninth-placed team in the table. "We're not going to reinvent soccer in these two days. We won't be making any experiments either," said the interim coach. "The important thing now is to give the boys the self-confidence and trust to be able to perform with the right attitude." It is not yet clear who will succeed him.
