2nd league - Schwartz after release: Hand over intact team

Alois Schwartz understands his release from FC Hansa Rostock. "At the end of the day, I'm a sportsman. The results weren't right," the former coach of the second division soccer club told the "Ostsee-Zeitung" (Thursday). "I'm handing over a team that is intact. That's the most important thing."

Rostock had recently lost 0:2 against FC Schalke 04. In the past three games, the Mecklenburgers have only picked up one point. After 16 match days, the Hanseatic side are 16th in the table. After his arrival at Hansa at the end of March 2023, Schwartz had led the club from the relegation zone to 13th place in the table. "Last season, people wanted to nail our coffin shut. We fought back, were able to open the lid again and get up," said the 56-year-old. "That was symbolic of how much the team fought on the pitch."

After a brief high in the current season with nine points from the first four games, Rostock were unable to build on the results. "We were never shot down and were always on an equal footing. The games always went the other way," said Schwartz. "The luck of the match wasn't on our side. That's when decisions like this happen in sport."

Under interim coach Uwe Speidel, Rostock will face SC Paderborn on Friday (18:30/Sky). "I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the game against Paderborn and for them to stay in the league," said Schwartz, adding: "This is important for the region that I've come to know and appreciate."
