Minister Responsible for Economic Aid and Collaboration - Schulze: Aid for development also yields economic benefits

The Development Minister, Svenja Schulze, from the SPD party, is against budget cuts in her department. She emphasized this during a speech at the Catholic Day in Erfurt on Saturday. Schulze stated, "It's clear that we want to keep investing in development cooperation." She also highlighted the importance of this investment for people in Germany. She mentioned, "If you don't only want to appeal to our moral compass and solidarity, you can also consider the economic aspect: For every second euro earned in Germany comes from exports, so investing in international politics and our partnerships is a smart move."

Earlier, the Federal Finance Minister, Christian Lindner, from the FDP party, had proposed substantial savings in the federal budget for 2025 from the Development Ministry. Schulze asserted on Saturday that the budget will not be finalized until it's approved by the Bundestag in December. She added, "Until that happens, I'll be advocating for more funds with all the organizations we work with in international development projects, not less."

Schulze participated in a project launch of the international Catholic aid organization, missio, on Saturday. The organization has created a mobile exhibition - a "missio-truck" trailer - to spread awareness about modern slavery and how it's connected to consumption in the Western world.

The 103rd Catholic Day commenced on Wednesday in Erfurt. The event's organizers anticipate approximately 20,000 visitors, both male and female. In addition to discussing religious topics, social and political issues will also be on the agenda.
