Labor market - Schulte: Integration of foreigners is fundamental for the economy
According to the Northern Employment Agency in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, war refugees from Ukraine have so far mainly found work in the hospitality, retail and manufacturing sectors. However, the professional integration of other people from the war zones is progressing rather slowly. As the employment agency announced on Monday at a symposium in Schwerin, around 3,700 Ukrainian nationals were employed in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in September and subject to social insurance contributions. Just under 4600 were registered as unemployed and around 2400 were currently attending integration courses. According to the latest figures, around 24,000 Ukrainian refugees live in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, most of them women, children and young people.
State Secretary for Economic Affairs Jochen Schulte referred to the growing need for manpower in almost all sectors of the state's economy. The integration of refugees offers extensive opportunities to help meet this demand. "The recognition of qualifications, in-service training to become a skilled worker and language skills still pose major challenges at present," admitted the SPD politician. He appealed to entrepreneurs and interest groups to also support the social integration of immigrants. The cooperation of all stakeholders is crucial.
According to Schulte, the state supports these efforts financially, for example as part of the Ukraine labor market program or through the integration services. "Diversity and the ability of companies and society to integrate will be elementary building blocks for securing the competitiveness of companies and thus the prosperity of society," emphasized Schulte.
At the Federal Council meeting in Berlin on Friday, the state government tabled a motion for a resolution that aims, among other things, to speed up the placement of migrants in the labor market. To this end, job centers and immigration authorities are to be provided with appropriate and needs-based funding. Services such as integration guides, whose work proved successful in 2015 and 2016, are to be expanded and the requirements for the qualification of language trainers and language teachers are to be less rigid.
